Hill #1 – Chalmers

The Castle – Mike A.

Hill #3 – Kirk

Hill #4 – Durrant

Hill #5 – Jared

Sprint – Jay

Beautiful morning for a ride. Cloud cover kept the sun off our backs but brought the humidity.

A few items of note from today. Mike A. pimped his teammate GC for the Castle climb then Jared pimped Kirk at the top of Hill #5. Clint had a flat on the descent after Hill #1.

We all came to a full stop for the light at Mill & Washington/Curry before the sprint. When the light turned green Jared (on a MTB) was off like a rocket. Jay grabbed his wheel and Jared took him halfway across the bridge with a huge gap. Jay held off the chasers but just barely, crossing the line inches ahead of Kirk, GC and Durrant.

Quote of the day from Chalmers “Of all the days to go for the sprint it was a guy on a mountain bike and Jay at the front”.

Joe DeMars was putting on a clinic today winning the first 4 hills then Gabe spoiled his shenanigans by taking Hill 5.

With the Triple Crown safe we headed back.  That’s where a little controversy begins.

After riding down Galvin Parkway we stopped for the light at Van Buren.  When traffic cleared we proceeded.  That’s when Brett sprinted ahead grabbing the draft of a Phoenix city bus.  It was actually pretty funny seeing him drafting the bus and slowly pulling away from the group.  Brett built a nice little gap.

But the bus only took him a half mile or so then pulled off.  I thought for certain we’d catch him before Mill.  Except for the light.

Brett’s timing was perfect.  He hit the light at Mill/Curry with green turning to yellow, slipped through with a gap and left the rest of us stopped at the Red.

The controversy?

There was some, not a lot, but some discussion surrounding the use of the city bus as an aid to his sprint win.  Most of that discussion though was from Aaron who was “best of the rest” and was looking to get himself a win.

But as Joe DeMars noted, any one of use could’ve done the same.  So with no real outcry of abuse it appears Brett’s Sprint victory remains intact.

Hoss made the shot, after more than one, two, three, well….

May 23, 2014

It was Friday lite at Hoss’ place but we picked up riders along the way.  By the time we were rolling up 56th St. towards Camelback we were about 30 strong.  Great to see Chuck out on the tandem with Cameron and they even mixed it up on the sprint on Mill.

It was the Clint and Joe show today with those two winning the hills but GC took the sprint.

The Castle – Clint
Hill 3 – Joe D.
Hill 4 – Joe D.
Hill 5 – Clint

Hoss missed the shot but boy it was close.

What a gorgeous day for a ride! Great turn out and no crashes so all is good.

There was talk of Justin making a run at the Triple Crown so a couple riders, Al and GC, were sent up the road early. Justin, Joe and others chased and for a moment it looked like they caught Al and GC but it was Gardner and Ben-Horin. So Justin and Joe went off again but it wasn’t enough. Al and GC held the gap with GC taking Hill 1 so the Triple Crown was safe.

On the return trip the group had to stop at the light at Mill/Curry. Justin had the timing right and nailed it the moment the light changed. He grabbed a huge lead and held everyone off taking the sprint.

Here’s the question of the day. How warm does it have to get before Kocher comes out of hibernation?
